In 1897, famed US Supreme Court justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr, said: “For the rational study of the law the black letter man may be the man of the present, but
the man of the future is the man of statistics and the master of economics.” Given his prescience on the growing importance of statistics, Holmes might not be surprised by the large number of legal cases where statistics play a key role. However, it is likely that he would be appalled by the misuse of statistics in many proceedings. more
